Merrick Cockell
Merrick Cockell is Chairman of London Councils, the voice of local government in the Capital. Elected in 2006, he has pledged to fight for fairer funding for London and to defend the boroughs' traditional freedoms to make local decisions in the interests of their residents.
He is also Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Before becoming Leader in 2000, Councillor Cockell held a variety of senior jobs at Kensington and Chelsea, including Chairman of the Education and Libraries Committee and Chief Whip of the Conservative majority on the Council.
As a ward Councillor he has served the people of Stanley ward in Chelsea since first being elected to the Council in 1986.
He has been a long-time Chairman of both the Portobello Business Centre, which provides training and professional advice to start-up and small businesses, and the Chelsea Theatre, a theatre and arts charity.
Councillor Cockell lives in the Royal Borough with his wife and two daughters. He founded and ran an international trading company for 23 years until being elected Chairman of London Councils in 2006. |
