Sports Day: Wednesday 21st July 2010
Our first Academy Sports Day is shortly upon us and it will be held at the Millennium Athletics Arena, Battersea Park. On the back of this letter is a map showing its precise location. The map also indicates the buses that run closest to the park.
A key element in the success of the day will be the willingness of parents/carers to provide transport to and from the Millennium Athletics Arena or if applicable, to allow students to make their own way to and from the arena by public transport. I would ask for the support of as many parents as possible in this respect. If you are able to help by driving, it would be really appreciated, and advisable to arrange groups of children for lifts to help keep traffic to a minimum. There is ample parking space at Battersea Park close to the arena for dropping off and collecting passengers. If you were to stay there is a charge for parking.
We do, however, fully appreciate that not all parents are able to contribute in this way, nor is public transport an appropriate alternative. There is, therefore, a limited amount of free transport available to and from the Millennium Arena. In order to arrange this efficiently we need to know how many students require transport. If you wish your son/daughter to use the coach service to and from the Academy, please can you download and complete the proforma at the end of this letter. It must be returned to your child’s Learning Coach by Monday 19th July 2010 at the very latest.
Students using the coach service need to meet in the Hall at the Academy at 9.00 am. Those going directly to the Millennium Arena, Battersea Park must arrive by 9.45 am. Registration will take place at the arena at 10.00 am. It is anticipated that the event will finish with registration at approximately 2.00 pm and those students making their own way home, or being transported by parents, will be dismissed from the arena at that time. Parents of students using the coach service should note that the coaches will return to the Academy at approximately 2.30 pm from where students will be dismissed. Should the event overrun a little, registration will be delayed. No student will be dismissed until after registration.
Packed lunch will be provided for all students. Some refreshments will be available at the Stadium so it would be advisable for student to bring some money. Additionally, students may bring appropriate food items if required (in line with our healthy eating policy). They should also bring plenty of water, sun filter cream and hats in case the weather turns out to be really hot. Students on prescribed medication must also be responsible for bringing it with them, together with inhalers/epipens if appropriate, and any contact telephone numbers for the day in case of emergencies.
No students will be allowed to leave the Stadium during the course of the day.
Academy PE kit must be worn to and from the stadium
For boys and girls this means black socks, black shorts (or skorts for girls) and short sleeve PE tops (or the plain black ones provided at the start of the year). If a tracksuit is worn it must be the Academy one else plain black.
Students should not leave their belongings in the Changing Rooms at the arena because their security cannot be guaranteed. They should take their bags to wherever they are sitting in the arena.
If the weather is either wet or uncertain in the morning, please look at the Academy website in the first instance which will be kept up to date with information. If you have to telephone the Academy please do so after 8.30am only to check on the arrangements for the day. If we have to cancel Sports Day at this stage then the day in the Academy will start at 9.15am. Students will need to bring in their normal books and equipment for lessons on a Wednesday. If the events have to be abandoned at the Arena part of the way through then we shall, as far as possible, allow students to make their own way home. Those who are using the coach service or who have to await the arrival of parents will continue to be supervised at the Stadium.
I would like to express my thanks to parents/carers in anticipation of their support this year. Any parents wishing to attend are most welcome but seating is very limited so we would request that you stand just in front of the main building as you enter the arena itself. This makes the supervision of the students not competing more manageable. (You will be given a guest pass on entry to the stadium). Please indicate if you will be attending to assist us in our planning.
As you will be aware from previous letters, this is the last day of term for students and we consider it a very special way to end our historic first year. We look forward to seeing you if you are able to join us.
