The Year 12 A-Level Biologists visited Juniper Hall FSC Centre in Dorking, Surrey, completing environmental and ecological investigations for their Practical Endorsement with the centre’s tutors.
Day 1 began with a capture-mark-recapture technique on pond snails using “snailpaint” to estimate population size. Next, they hiked to the woodlands to compare biodiversity in coppiced versus mature areas using systematic quadrat sampling and light meters, followed by data analysis back in the lab. They then collected woodlice for a choice chamber investigation on abiotic preferences, running another statistical test. After a delicious dinner, students learned to set mammal traps, camouflaging them from local foxes before leaving them overnight. Before bed, everyone enjoyed a campfire with marshmallow s’mores, hot chocolate, and games in the evening sun.
Day 2 started with the exciting opening of the traps, revealing six small rodents (wood mice and voles!). They then hiked to the base of Box Hill, taking in stunning views of the Surrey Hills while using line transects to analyze changes in plant species richness and evenness. The final study involved recapturing the pond snails to complete their mathematical analysis.
They boarded the coach home totally exhausted, but thrilled with a wonderful countryside experience full of great laughs and memories!
