Independent Learning (IL) is a key part of the curriculum at Chelsea Academy. We believe it consolidates and furthers students’ learning so that they make outstanding progress not only in their lessons but also in their independent study. We have clear evidence from our past GCSE and A Level results that students with the highest ATL scores in IL are the students who make the most progress.
Key Stage 3 Independent Learning
Students can expect to receive 30-60 minutes per subject per week in Key Stage 3.
Key Stage 4 Independent Learning
Students can expect to receive 60-90 minutes per subject per week in Key Stage 4.
Key Stage 5 Independent Learning
Students can expect to receive 5 and a half hours per subject per week, mirroring the amount of time they have in lessons. The time spent on Independent Learning in Key Stage 5 should include wider reading around the topics being studied.
Independent Learning in the Library
An Independent Learning club takes place at the start and end of every Academy day. The Library is also open to students who wish to find a quiet space to study and/or complete their Independent Learning at the end of each Academy day. Typically, students who attend prefer to complete as much of their Independent Learning as possible at the Academy in order to leave themselves with a free evening.
In addition, a considerable amount of Independent Learning and revision can be completed online, via Google Classroom.
